Men's Health lists greenest — and non-greenest — driving cities Print E-mail
NEW YORK (AP) _ It seems everything's bigger in Texas — even the greenhouse gas emissions.
For its July/August issue, Men's Health magazine compiled a list of the "greenest drivers" in America and those who are "fossil fools." Four Texas cities made the bottom 10 with failing scores, including Arlington, at No. 100.

"It was actually pretty striking when we amassed the data," says Matt Marion, Deputy Editor of Men's Health. "You're talking no mass transit system, driving everywhere you go, and driving vehicles that burn through the fuel."

A state-by-state review by The Associated Press in 2007 found that Texas is the leader in emitting greenhouse gases, cranking out more than the next two biggest producers combined, California and Pennsylvania.

The Pacific Northwest fared much better in the Men's Health list, with Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Spokane, Wash. making the top 10. Many of the top cities had effective public transportation, but Marion pointed to Madison, Wis., as a city that fared well because people are good about keeping their cars tuned up and fuel-efficient.

For its grading, Men's Health looked at data on gas consumption, miles traveled, air quality, vehicle efficiency and mass-transit quality and usage.

They used 2005 statistics from the National Transit Database on the average number of car trips; 2005 numbers on wasted gas from the Texas Transportation Institute; 2003-2005 data on pollution from the American Lung Association; 2006 figures on gas consumption from the U.S. Energy Information Administration; and 2006 figures from SimplyMap for gas spending and car buying and maintenance patterns.
